VisionStream has the contract for Telecom services in the area from South Auckland to the top of the North Island.  Sky Communications has a contract with VisionStream to provide all inside-plant transmission services from Northland to Central Auckland.

Provisions within the Contract

Sky Communications provides expertise in the following areas for the Transmission Network:

  • infrastructure design and installation
  • fault restoration
  • preventative maintenance
  • spares management
  • provisioning for 2Mb/s and above
  • customer connection for 2Mb/s and above
  • all installation requirements for the Transmission Network with Telecom Exchanges
  • fibre connection with Telecom Exchanges and customer premises

The Challenge.

Telecom had 1000+ cell sites to build across New Zealand and Sky Communications tendered and won a quarter of the new Mobile XT Network roll out.

The Solution.

Telecom wanted to upgrade and extend its Mobile network coverage and infrastructure to provide more capacity and speed for immediate and future Mobile users.

Sky Communications provided a turn key solution consisting of design, build and integration

Key Results.

During 2008 Skycommunications, as a prime contractor to Telecom NZ, performed the full turnkey deployment of 25% of the national GSM 850 rollout and subsequently performed the upgrade from GSM 850 to WCDMA 850 and WCDMA 2100 in selected areas on time and within budget.

The Challenge.

Sky Communications were tasked with building 21 rapid deployment structures in the remote Solomon's Islands under extreme, usually no accessible jungle terrain over a 6 week period.

The Solution.

Sky Communications seconded 50+ riggers and RF technicians to the Solomon Islands to construct, install and commission Mobile Towers including the RF and microwave equipment with a project plan that was well executed.

Key Results.

Be Mobile now provides in excess of 75% of high speed Mobile data and voice coverage to the major populace in the greater Solomon Island's group.

What was it?

We partnered Lucent Technologies in the operation and deployment of Telecom’s CDMA One and 1XRTT network, undertaking project and program management, turnkey design, construction and integration for Auckland and Northern, the largest concentration of sites in NZ.

What was it?

Selected by Ericsson as sole contractor for the turnkey rollout of 3G Base Stations in Tauranga. Equipment comprised Ericsson RBS3106 and 3206 Node B and Ericsson Mini Link and Traffic Nodes. All rollout targets, including the extremely demanding ‘first call’ milestone, were met.

What was it?

Exclusive turnkey Base Station deployment contractor for TelstraClear. The work involved POP site establishment and installation, commissioning and integration of 3.5GHz equipment.

What was it?

Turnkey design, installation and commissioning of Alcatel 28GHz LMDS and Marconi 2.4Ghz SSR customer and base station equipment for TelstraClear. Carried out using Radio and Mux equipment, cabinet pre-assembly, commissioning and as-builds’.

What was it?

We perform full turnkey design, installation and commissioning of most of TelstraClear’s DMR Links, including radio link, customer cabinet, Mux and network configuration. In some instances site acquisition, lease negotiation, Building and Resource Consent application are performed. Equipment types are Nokia Flexihoper, Ericsson Mini Link and Ceragon.

What is it?

Civil installation works for 2 degrees’ first tier rollout in Auckland and Wellington in 2007, since when we have been instrumental in delivering all further key sites.

Project involves:
  • Site project management. Site types include rooftop, roadside and greenfield.
  • Fabrication and installation of steel support structures
  • All accommodation works in advance of the technical installation.
  • Technical installation works for the first prototype collocation site.

Initial network reset on over 200 sites in three cities for 2 degrees. The aggressive program was completed on time and within budget. Around the same time, we also completed the technical installation of Huawei-supplied equipment on numerous sites around Auckland and Wellington.

Installation, commissioning and integration of Nokia GSM and UMTS Base Stations for Vodafone. We met an aggressive rollout target for 2006/07. Sites consisted of greenfield, building, roadside, and metro sites and project briefs varied from technical implementation to mount fabrication and Civil construction. Most sites also required installation and commissioning of Digital Microwave Radio Links, typically Ericsson.

Sky Communications conducts ongoing multi-site optimisation projects for Vodafone, covering antenna upgrades, BTS Swapouts and additional sectors. Vehicles are fitted with scanning receivers, GPS receivers, a dead reckoning system, and test mobiles – all operated by experienced Sky Communications engineers. Processed data is passed on to Vodafone to enable optimisation of its UMTS network.

Nationwide Site Survey: Vodafone

The provision of drawings and the population of an extensive database for Vodafone NZ. In addition, a maintenance evaluation was carried out at every base station. The project was completed ahead of schedule despite extremely tight deadlines.
